Bimoli Wreck, North Sulawesi

North Sulawesi

The Bimoli, original name unknown, is a Japanese freighter that sank in the Second World War. It is about 100 m long. The ship is said to have been torpedoed, from the air or from a submarine. What local people say is a submarine. The wreck lies in the shipping lane near Bitung, so ships are often heard overhead and the visibility is not always good.

The deepest part is about 35 m. The map lists 8–30 m. In 2006 the upper parts were being lifted for scrap. The propeller, the gun, and the portholes were already gone. What remains is no longer a tidy deck. Bakelite ammunition is still on the wreck. Do not touch it and do not lift it.

On the way up, passing ships are a real hazard. Ascend on a line, look up, and do not surface in the middle of the lane. Water in this strait is often 26–28°C, and in July and August it can be down to 26°C.
