Manta Alley is at the south tip of Komodo Island, facing the Indian Ocean. Feeding and cleaning stations are at 10–25 m, over bommies. The bay shallows to about 5–10 m. The water is green with plankton, and that is what brings the rays.
The current is moderate to strong, with surge. South temperatures are often 20–25°C. The most reliable season is October to March. July and August are often too rough. Entry is by boat. Do not swim in front of a ray.
