Tjendrawasih Barge Wreck, North Sulawesi

North Sulawesi

On 26 December 1993 a dredging barge named Tjendrawasih was tethered for an excavation job. That night rain and heavy waves sank it. Workers tried to refloat it with hundreds of empty oil drums. The barge did not come up.

The barge is now lodged on four rocky outcrops, almost upside down, tilted about 20 degrees. The top is about 4 m. The bottom is about 26 m. The map lists 15–30 m. That map figure misses the shallow top. Cables and many drums hang on the seaward side. On the slope below there is more wreckage and more drums. Do not pull on a cable or a drum.

The barge bottom facing upward is only lightly covered. What hangs underneath is full of sponges, encrusting coral, and oysters. Soft coral grows upside down on the cables. Lionfish, large sweetlips, angelfish, and batfish are here. Raccoon butterflyfish are unusually numerous. Entry is by boat.
